Tasks and Objectives

The Institut für Baubiologie Rosenheim GmbH (IBR) was founded in 1982. The Institute’s objective is to incorporate aspects of building biology and human ecology into the assessment of the living environment and to provide planners, architects, and construction professionals with information regarding the selection and use of building products.

A key focus of its current activities is the awarding of the IBR Seal of Approval. This seal helps consumers identify tested building products. It identifies products that have been examined according to the applicable IBR testing criteria and that met the specified requirements for the tested parameters at the time of certification.

Depending on the product group, selected properties relating to emissions, material composition, building biology, and the environment may be examined and evaluated. Details regarding which properties were tested, which test methods and evaluation standards were applied, and the validity period of the certification can be found in the respective certificate, test report, and associated testing criteria.

The seal of approval applies exclusively to the specific product or tested product variant and to the properties expressly examined. It does not constitute a comprehensive statement regarding all health or environmental impacts of a product, nor does it guarantee individual health compatibility.

The IBR Seal of Approval has been awarded for over 40 years. Approximately 300 products from domestic and international manufacturers currently hold a valid IBR Seal of Approval. Details regarding certification status, scope, and validity period can be found in the product-specific documentation.
